Austin Hatch in serious accident

I feel bad for taking so long to get to this, but I would be doing a great disservice to the story if I didn’t put this out there. 2013 Michigan Basketball recruit Austin Hatch was seriously injured in a plane crash on Saturday morning. He and another young man committed on June 23rd, and I was planning a post on them this week. This takes precedence, so bear with me.

Austin was traveling with his father, step-mother from Fort Wayne to Boyne Falls, Michigan when the plane hit a pole. Austin was the only survivor. He suffered several serious injuries including a fractured skull, two punctured lungs, and several broken bones. He was immediately placed into a medically-induced coma to reduce the stress on his brain. He is expected to be removed from the coma this afternoon. Despite the severity of his injuries, he is expected to make it through.

The story gets worse. In 2003, he and his father survived another plane crash that claimed the lives of his mother, brother, sister, and dog. Wow. I really don’t know what to say.

This is one of those stories that involves sports, but not really. I have no idea if he will ever return to playing basketball, or even walking for that matter, but who cares. This young man has known pain, both physical and emotional, that I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. This is bigger than Michigan basketball.

So please keep Austin in your thoughts and prayers. I will update the story as much as possible going forward.
